GALENA
VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
HISTORY
Since beginning, Galena and the surrounding area relied upon volunteers to help with fire protection.  The fire equipment first consisted of buckets and hand-pulled hose carts.  It evolved to a horse drawn fire apparatus and then to motorized equipment.  Now the department has good modern equipment that is consistently being updated.

But the manpower has always been supplied by a group of dedicated individuals.  Our organization now consists of up to 20 members, ready, willing and able to meet any emergency that might arise.  They are notified by personal pager and two way radios.

The City of Galena maintains the salary of a full-time driver and two relief drivers. The city also budgets enough money each year to cover the many expenses necessary to maintain a fire department.
